Visiting Logan in Chicago between Christmas and the New Year.

Freezing cold and a long walk led us to this beauty, a 26-foot tall statue of Marilyn Monroe by John Seward Johnson II (born 1930; also known as J. Seward Johnson Jr). The Blonde Bombshell is striking the infamous hot-air-up-the-skirt shot from "The Seven Year Itch" and people line up all day to take pictures of her.

A lot of art people (especially locals) hate it-- but I think it's hilariously perfect.

Alright folks, I'm here in beautiful downtown Baltimore visiting Logan on the first national tour of the 2010 Broadway revival of La Cage Aux Folles. The show is playing at the Hippodrome, which has this gorgeous old sign that instantly makes me feel nostalgic.

I got to do a little backstage tour earlier when I dropped him off for the matinee. It was great to see a few of the girls (and learn that you can now follow @liliwhiteass on twitter). I'm racing back over to meet him for dinner, and then actually seeing the show, starring George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber, tonight!

My New Tattoo

I went to Rivington Tattoo yesterday-- the new home of my tattoo guy, Sweety.

The new shop is really beautiful. Simple, clean... dark wood floors and an amazing/ornante tin tile ceiling that is gorgeous to look at when you're getting needles full of ink drilled into your arm.

Here's what we started out with... the bare area between my wrist

and the bottom of the clover.

And the other side.

Sweety traced the bow and Mickey Mouse on carbon-transfer.... but then free-handed the rest first starting in lime green Sharpie marker.

The workstation is kept very clean-- no spills.

After the rough outline was done, he went back with a fine tip red Sharpie, and finally a blue ballpoint gel pen.

Once he was finished sketching, I checked it out in the mirror and we quickly got started. We all know I don't have the beefiest frame, or a strong stomach so it's no surprise that I get a little woozy when I subject myself to this whole tattoo thing... but Sweety is always totally cool about it and after about five minutes I totally thought I was gonna barf.

Actually ran to the bathroom cause I-thought-I-was-gonna-puke-barf. But I didn't. I calmly went back to my chair, and he brought be a damp paper towel for my forehead and let me recline in the chair.

When the bear of a receptionist found out that I'd almost fainted he was really amazing and rushed to the bodega to grab me a candy bar. I felt like Shleby-- a reference I wasn't sure they'd get, so I didn't verbalize it.

And here's the final product, obviously still very raw and swollen-- but I'll totally share updated photos once she's healed.

Okay, so RiRi lives in the big city, but it's kinda gloomy out-- so she's not that into it.

But she's got a fine man in her life... and he's totally artsy.

And he doesn't like that it's so bleak either.

Having worked in the Experiential Marketing / Brand Consulting realm for a minute, I was truly struck by the closing line of the interview.

"If we can just get the tools of connectivity into people's hands there's amazing, magical things they can do with it, far more than figuring out how to launch a media site from rural Scotland. You know? They can change the world, build trade in their countries, they can create livings for themselves they can become self-sustaining. There's so much you can do when you're just MORE connected."

Saturday September 24 - New York City

My boyfriend and I had just had our hair cut in Astor Square, and after he headed back uptown to rehearsal I went south into SoHo for some light shopping. The sidewalks were crowded with the typical herds of tourists, but because I had no where else I needed to be I casually, patiently strolled among them.

The gentle din of urban life, the hum of food trucks, the bad euro dj music emerging from the nearest mega-chain retailer were all interrupted by the sudden roar of a large, angry crowd. My pedestrian haze was quickly jolted back real life as I turned to see what I would later come to know as the Occupy Wall Street group.

They were aggressively protesting in the middle of the street fighting against traffic up Broadway. There seemed to little-to-no police presence in what seemed to be a spontaneous, unorganized riot-in-the-making... save for a few sweaty looking cops tailing the group at a safe distance.

That being said, a few hours later as I was crossing University at 12th street just south of Union Square, less than a block away from my boss's loft, and literally in the epicenter of a collision between the #OccupyWallSt kids (who were now running full bore) and a much larger contingent of NYPD that had planted themselves in a barricade mid intersection.

Seconds after I cleared the cross walk, the two groups met. Elbows hooked into heads, necks were clothesline-clipped by extended forearms, bodies mounded on the black pavement in piles of wrestling.

I had honestly never seen anything like it. The small group of spectators that had joined me on the street corner watched in silent shock for a moment before quickly continuing west, away from the brawl.

I ran into a couple of hipster girls from the New School who looked totally clueless. Without stopping, I said "you'd better just turn around and go the other way."

Not flying on Delta was physically painful for me, and easily one of the hardest parts about the trip. Luckily Juan Carlo, the first-class flight attendant, was kind enough to sneak complimentary cocktails (in real glassware nonetheless) back to us young queens in coach. After our first round-- served in plastic cups by these troll ladies, he magically appeared with these in his hands: "It just tastes better from a glass," he said.

It tastes better when it's free, I thought.

Later, reading the current issue of Vanity Fair, we spotted a piece on "Catch Me If You Can", saw these lovely ladies and both asked "who do these legs belong too?!?!".

I'm just hoping Rak is one of 'em..... If not at least gimme a Katie Webber, please.

Okay, so it's been a week since Todd, Logan, and I saw "SUCKERPUNCH" directed by Zack Snyder on IMAX at the AMC Lincoln Center. I left the movie completely entranced by the twisting-turning visual aesthetic, the jarring jumps across time & space, and the ferocious femme fatales that take this progressive new style of film making and forcibly shove it down your throat.

The ladies were shutting it down in real life on the red carpet at the London premiere.

I wasn't immediately sure I loved the movie, but I knew that it was totally into these GIRLS!!!! They were absolutely killing it in every way from their emotional performances to their looks. They were nailing it. Especially the scenes in the Dance Studio-- just leotards, belted cardigans, and hair for days.... yes.

After weeks of antici-pation (Rocky Horror Reference), the reigning and self-proclaimed "Queen of Pop" Ms. Britney Spears has finally released her latest video for the dance odyssey HOLD IT AGAINST ME.

In a new pop universe, where nothing is EVER new-- rather a reference of something else, which was probably a reference of something originally inspired by Warhol anyway... bleh. Anyway.....

The piece recalls many reoccurring themes and motifs from the heritage of Brit's long and illustrious career:

1. OUTER-SPACE: Our girl has been 'obsassed' with rocket-ships and alien planets since the days of OOPS... so it's no surprise to see the video open with shots of a firey asteroid of, errr... sheer talent (?) plummeting toward planet Earth.

2. SURVEILLANCE: The whole thing has a behind-the-scenes, photoshoot-of-a-photoshoot, paparazzi sort of feel that, as I've mentioned before, reminds me of Fischerspooner's original EMERGE video. We've seen it before in such classics as SLAVE4U, EVERYTIME,

Friday, December 3, 2010 - Foxwoods Theatre

The show had it's first real preview on Sunday, November 28th and I scored a ticket to a performance a few days later. Immediately after work I bolted through the crowded, cold streets of Times Square to make it in enough time to get a double-pinot-in-a-plastic-cup and get to my seat in the last row of the orchestra before the curtain went up.

Let's start with the curtain; it's big, bold, and sketchy just like the rest of the show. The abstracted, geometric lines splatter off the neon cherry red backdrop as Spidey lunges toward with a sinister Green Goblin with his spiked tongue nearly as sharp as the dagger in his claw, all the while as an curiously curvy Mary Jane plunges off the Brooklyn Bridge lumbering in the shadowy distance. The whole thing is framed by towering skyscrapers and metallic webbing as I'm sure you can imagine.

The house grows dark, and a piercing electric guitar chord cuts through the fading light to reveal an unforgettable interpretation of the same scene illustrated on the curtain-- our hero, villain, and victim in a dramatic tableaux of life and death. It looks daring and dangerous, and the Vegas-style hydraulics thrust silently at seemingly staggering heights. Within a few short moments, we're quickly transported 'through the Astral Plane' into the world of Arachne, the ferocious new super-villain created by the famously infamous director, Julie Taymor.

Attempting to dissect the intricacies of the plot would be annoying for me and you, so I'll save us both the hassle and just encourage you to SEE THIS SHOW. See it a couple of times if you can-- because trust me, there is a lot going on here. And I'm not only talking about the mind-blowing scenic and costume design, the crazy good music, the FUH-LYING, and the incredible sense of danger you feel watching them pull it off.... But I'm really mean to say that there is a LOT happening in the concept and the subtext of a narrative arc that Broadway has never seen before. Many have criticized the show's seemingly absent 'plot-line', failing to appreciate the many layers of storytelling operating across a catalog over nearly 50 years of material-- MOST TYPICALLY told one comic-frame at a time.

I also have to record the fact that the show ran from start-to-finish without stopping-- which at that stage of development on the third night of previews, despite lacking any semblance of a coherent ending, was a roaring success. There was a collective electricity among the audience-- we experience the insanity of the show together the way parents and siblings spectate a home-town high school football game, cheering for every small point the show scored along the way.

In the end, I was left stunned, confused and I knew I had to return to see the evolution of the preview process, to track the progression of both artistry and technicality. My next encounter with the show will be the subject of Part Two of this series-- but before I depart let me say this:

HOW TO ENJOY/GET SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK (without feeling like a total tool)-

Get yourself a seat in the Flying Circle.
Really READ the song titles and character names (especially the Geek Chorus).
Forget about 'the book' and remember SPIDER-MAN has a heritage that is built of countless books-- so there.
Don't worry about the fact that this shit jumps around what seems to be some sort of Time/Space Continuum, or something (ie The Astral Plane?).
Right?
PS - I'm writing this at 3am, watching 'Across The Universe' on DVD-- hey hey.

OLiO - 3 Greenwich Ave @ West 8th Street

Last week when I first read about OLiO on gothamist.com I was struck by the ginormous, mirrored, disco-ball-like pizza oven hulking in the corner.

Apparently the thing heats up to like a thousand degrees or something, and they only cook the pizzas for 30-45 mother-effing SECONDS.... to achieve this weird crispy/yet doughy paradox that also allows the toppings to remain totally frosh.

Hallsey (@hallcarlo) and I went to check it out for ourselves on Saturday night, and here are the bullet points:

- Cocktail Menu: light summery drinks, all designed for ladies. I had the Aperol Spritzer (Proseco, Aperol, Soda) that was a nice starter, but gimme a better Vodka selection, por favor.

- Table Decor: ditch the pointless Manora-looking candle holders and make a little more room for my plate, thanks.

- Dinner Menu: please re-print in a legible format.... 8 point font is hard to read in the near-dark.

- The Amalfitana Pizza was delish with fresh arugula and lemon slices.
